Prior to 1995, under the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare, medical education and healthcare were in the state. In order to promote medical education in mid-state from the view of providing health care in the state as a whole, the medical education department was established by the State Government in the year 1995. The first medical college of 17th and State of Madhya Pradesh was established in Gwalior in the year 1946. In the year 1948, the medical college in Indore, the medical college of Bhopal and medical college Jabalpur in the year 1955, the Rewa of the medical college in the year 1963 and the medical college of the sea was established in the year 2009. Seven (Vidisha, Datia, Khandwa, Ratlam, Shahdol, Shivpuri, Chhindwara) are in the process of establishment of new government medical colleges. The construction work of the medical college building in Datia, Khandwa, Vidisha, Ratlam, Shahdol is in progress.
