  1. Multiple Choice Questions based on a Discursive passage of 400-450 words to test

inference, evaluation and vocabulary. Ten out of twelve questions to be answered.

(10×1=10)

  1. Multiple Choice Questions based on a Case-based factual passage (with visual input statistical data, chart etc.) of 300-350 words to test analysis and interpretation. Ten out of

twelve questions to be answered. (10×1=10)

(Total length of two passages to be 700-750 words).

III. Multiple Choice Questions based on an extract from drama/prose to test inference,

evaluation, and vocabulary. Any 1 out of 2 extracts to be done. (5×1=5)

  1. Multiple Choice Questions based on an extract from poetry to test analysis and

interpretation. Any 1 out of 2 extracts to be done (5×1=5)

Grammar                                                                                                                                                10 Marks

  1. Ten Multiple Choice Questions, out of twelve, to be answered. Questions shall be based

on the following:

  1. Tenses
  2. Modals

iii. Subject – verb concord

  1. Reported speech
  2. Commands and requests
  3. Statements
  4. Questions
  5. Determiners

PART – B

Writing                                                                                                                                                     10 Marks

  1. Formal letter (word limit 100-120 words) based on a given situation. One out of two

questions is to be answered. 5 marks

  1. Writing an analytical paragraph (word limit 100-120 words) based on a given outline/ Data/

Chart/ Cue/s .One out of two questions is to be answered. 5 marks

III. Four out of six Short Answer Type Questions to be answered in 20-30 words each from

FIRST FLIGHT and FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET (two out of three from FIRST FLIGHT

and two out of three from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET).  2×4=8 marks

  1. Four out of six Short Answer Type Questions to be answered in 40-50 words each from

FIRST FLIGHT and FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET (two out of three from FIRST FLIGHT

and two out of three from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET).           3×4=12 marks

  1. One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from FIRST FLIGHT to be answered in

about 100-120 words each to assess creativity, imagination, and extrapolation beyond the

text and across the texts. This can be a passage-based question taken from a situation/plot

from the texts.                                                                                                 5 marks

  1. One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET on

theme or plot involving interpretation, extrapolation beyond the text, and inference or

character sketch to be answered in about 100-120 words.               5 marks

CBSE Class 10 English Literature Syllabus 2024 Question Paper

SECTION A: READING (20 Marks 50 Periods)

Qs 1-2. This section will have two unseen passages of a total length of 700-750. The arrangement within the reading section is as follows:

  • Factual passage of 300-350 words with eight very short answer type questions. (8 marks)
  • Discursive passage of 350-400 words with four short answer type questions to test inference, evaluation and analysis and four MCQs to test vocabulary. (12 marks)

SECTION B: WRITING AND GRAMMAR (30 Marks 60 Periods)

  • Formal letter complaint / inquiry /placing order/ Letter to the editor / article in about 100-120 words. The questions will be thematically based on the prescribed books.. (8 marks)
  • Writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 150-200 words. (10 marks)

The Grammar syllabus will include the following areas in class X.

  1. Tenses
    2. Modals (have to/had to, must, should, need, ought to and their negative forms)
    3. Use of passive voice
    4. Subject-verb concord
    5. Reporting
    (i) Commands and requests
    (ii) Statements
    (iii) Questions
  2. Clauses:
    (i) Noun clauses
    (ii) Adverb clauses of condition and time
    (iii) Relative clauses
  3. Determiners
    8. Prepositions
    The above items may be tested through test types as given below:
  • Gap filling with one or two words to test Prepositions, Articles, Conjunctions, and Tenses. (4 marks)
  • Editing or omission. (4 marks)
  • Sentences reordering or Sentence Transformation in context. (4 marks)

SECTION C: LITERATURE TEXTBOOKS AND EXTENDED READING TEXT (30 Marks 60 Periods)

  • One out of two extracts from prose/poetry/drama for reference to context. Three very short answer questions. (4marks)

One mark in each extract will be for vocabulary. One question will be used for testing local and global comprehension and one question will be on interpretation.

  • Four short answer type questions from FIRST FLIGHT & FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET (two from each) to test local and global comprehension of theme and ideas (30-40 words each) (2×4=08 marks)
  • One out of two long answer type questions to assess how the values inherent in the texts have been brought out (FIRST FLIGHT & FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET). Creativity, imagination, and extrapolation beyond the text and across the texts will be assessed. (80-100 words). (8 marks)
  • One out of two Long Answer Questions on theme or plot or character involving interpretation and inference in about 150-200 words based on prescribing extended reading text. (10 marks)
