About Banaras Hindu University Pre-Medical Test

Medical education in Varanasi, the oldest living city of the world, dates from the days of Sushruta 500 BC. In fact, this is also the history of Medical education in India. The great treatise – ‘Sushruta Samhita’ is a living testimony of contributions to Medical education that originated in Varanasi, Sushruta was the first to perform cadaver dissections and described a number of operating instruments and surgical operations.

Perhaps it is a continuation of this historical perspective that Medical education in Banaras Hindu University took roots in 1920 with the establishment of the Department of Ayurveda under the Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922-1927). Under the influence of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji, Seth Mathuradas Vissanji Khimji of Bombay donated a large some of Rs.1.5 Lacs for the Ayurvedic College. This was further augmented by donations from Shri Daya Shankar Dev Shankar Dave of Kathiawar and Bombay.

The BHU PMT (Banaras Hindu University Pre-Medical Test) was an entrance examination conducted by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for admission to various medical undergraduate courses such as MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing, and other medical programs offered by the university. BHU PMT has been replaced by the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for admission to medical and dental courses across India.

The BHU PMT was conducted for selecting students for admission to medical and dental courses offered by the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and other medical institutions of Banaras Hindu University.

The exam covered undergraduate courses like MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing, and other medical and dental programs.

The BHU PMT used to have multiple-choice questions covering subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology), and sometimes General Knowledge and English. The pattern might have varied depending on the specific course.

Candidates who had completed their 10+2 education with the required subjects and minimum marks were eligible to apply for the BHU PMT.

Interested candidates had to apply online through the BHU PMT application portal. The application form required personal details, educational information, and other relevant information.

The Indian government introduced the NEET exam as a common entrance test for medical and dental courses across the country. As a result, BHU PMT was discontinued, and BHU’s medical admissions started to be based on NEET scores.
