About Indian Institute of Astrophysics

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a premier institute devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics. It traces its origins back to an observatory set up in 1786 at Madras which from the year 1792 began to formally function at its Nungambakkam premises as the Madras Observatory. In 1899, the observatory moved to Kodaikanal. In the year 1971, the Kodaikanal Observatory became an autonomous society, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.

The headquarters were shifted to Bengaluru into its present campus in Koramangala in 1975. Today, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, the Institute ranks as a premier institution devoted to research and education of astronomy and physics in the country. The main observing facilities of the Institute are located at Kodaikanal, Kavalur, Gauribidanur, and Hanle.

The Kodaikanal Observatory has for over a century been the principal center of activity in observational solar and atmospheric physics. The Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur has been the main optical observatory of the Institute for nighttime astronomy since the late 1960s. There are several telescopes in operation here, the foremost among these being the 2.34-meter Vainu Bappu Telescope. The Gauribidanur Radio Observatory has a decametre wave radio telescope array and a radioheliograph.

IIA conducts the following graduate programs leading to Ph.D. degrees:

Ph.D. Program – Jointly with Pondicherry Central University, Puducherry

Integrated M.Tech. – Ph.D. Program in collaboration with University of Calcutta, Kolkata

Indian Institute of Astrophysics Eligibility Criteria

Students who expect to complete M.Sc. (Physics) / Integrated M.Sc. (Physics) / B.E. / B.Tech. / M.E. / M.Tech. Degree by June 2021 or already completed, with 60% marks from Standard X onwards.

In addition to the above, the other minimum eligibility criteria to apply are, All India rank in GATE (OR) JEST exam should be in the range 1 – 250 (OR) qualification in UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF) exam (OR) currently valid KVPY / INSPIRE fellowship.

Age Limit: Maximum 25 years as of 1st January 2021

Selection Process for IIA Exam

Selection of candidates will be based on the performance in their IIA Screening Test (IIAST/JEST/GATE/UGC-CSIR-NET) conducted by the institute

Candidates shortlisted based on their performance in the IIAST will be called for a personal interview in IIA, Bangalore

• There are Two-Steps in the application procedure – registration and login. First, register by entering your name and valid e-mail address in the appropriate registration boxes from the link. A welcome message with further instructions will be sent to an e-mail address. You can then login and fill out the application form
• Before filling the form, keep ready with the scanned copies of your Photo, Date of Birth Proof, X, XII, Degree, Master Degree (If Applicable)
• Candidates will be asked to bring originals of the relevant documents for verification during the interview. Any false data provided on the form will automatically disqualify the candidate
• The final selection will be based on the interviews
